NORTON RECEIVES AWARD FROM COUNTY ENGINEERS FOR IMPROVING TRAFFIC SAFETY

BRAINERD, MN – The Minnesota County Engineers Association (MCEA) recognized state Rep. Kim Norton (DFL – Rochester) yesterday for her successful efforts to improve safety on Minnesota roads. Norton, who passed landmark primary seatbelt legislation last year, and led efforts to enact a new graduated driver’s license standard in 2008, received MCEA’s 2010 Appreciation of Outstanding Contribution to Better Minnesota Transportation Award in Brainerd on Wednesday.

“It was truly an honor to be recognized by the state’s engineers this week," said Rep. Norton. “These men and women have dedicated their lives, and their professional careers, to maintaining a safe and efficient transportation system in our state – a system that has given life to our economy and connected Minnesotans from one corner of our state to the other. I am proud of the work we have done together to make our roadways even safer.”

In 2009, 403 Minnesotans were killed in fatal traffic accidents compared to 455 in 2008. Rep. Norton, the MCEA, and Minnesotans in every corner of the state are hopeful Minnesota’s new primary seat belt law, in conjunction with the state’s graduated driver’s license rules, will continue reducing the incidence of fatal traffic accidents in Minnesota. But Norton contends that is up to Minnesotans.

“I urge all Minnesotans to buckle up,” Norton said. “It can literally be the choice between life and death.”
