Members of the K-12 Education Policy Committee and the Health and Human Services Policy Committee will hold a joint hearing on Tuesday, January 19 at 11:00am to discuss childhood obesity in Minnesota. A brief overview of the hearing is as follows:
Lawmakers will hear testimony from Dr. Howell Wechsler, Director, Division of Adolescent and School Health at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention about policy approaches to reduce obesity being used in other states.
Pat Adams, Assistant Commissioner of the Minnesota Department of Health will provide testimony regarding obesity in Minnesota and its effect on the health status of the state.
Dr. Marc Manley of Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Minnesota will present an overview of the costs of obesity on the health care system in Minnesota.
House and Senate members who have been meeting over the interim to address childhood obesity will also share legislative recommendations.
