ST. PAUL, MN - For the first time an advocacy day at the State Capitol has been organized by Minnesota’s Somali community. The event, taking place this Thursday, March 12, is being sponsored by Somali Action Alliance, the Organizing Apprenticeship Project, SEIU and Take Action Minnesota. Somali-Minnesotans who wish to deepen their civic engagement will be coming to the Capitol to meet their legislators, learn more about state government and discuss issues important to the community.
“Since the early 1990s, a large and growing Somali population has found a home here in Minnesota," said State Rep. Kim Norton (DFL - Rochester). “More than 40,000 refugees of a civil war in Somalia call Minnesota home. As citizens of Minnesota, the Somali community has a vested stake in the state’s future and share common interests with all Minnesotans.”
As a part of Somali Day at the Capitol, there will be an opportunity for Somali constituents to meet with their legislators. Breakout sessions for residents of Rochester will occur from 2:00 - 2:45pm in room 454 of the State Office Building. Rep. Norton will be participating in the event, and encourages all Somali residents of Rochester to meet with her at the breakout session and throughout the day.
“My door is open to all people of our community,” said Norton. “I look forward to Thursday’s event, and strongly encourage all Somali-Minnesotans to actively participate in the legislative process.”
