REP. KIM NORTON TO SERVE ON NATIONAL HEALTH COMMITTEES

ST. PAUL - State Rep. Kim Norton (DFL - Rochester) was recently appointed by Minnesota House Speaker Margaret Anderson Kelliher to serve on the National Conference of State Legislatures Health Committee and the National Conference of State Legislatures Project HITCH (Health Information Technology Champions). Chosen for her leadership on health care reform in Minnesota, Rep. Norton will bring a unique Minnesota perspective to a nationwide discussion on making health care more accessible, affordable, and effective in the United States.

“I am honored to serve with legislators from all around the country to share ideas and coordinate reform efforts that will help Minnesotans and all Americans enjoy better, more affordable health care," said Rep. Norton.

The NCSL Health Committee has purview over state and federal health programs, legislation, regulations and policies. The committee educates Congress and federal agencies about state concerns regarding developments in federal health initiatives and programs and grants to states. In addition, it serves as a forum for legislators and legislative staff to learn about and share information regarding health programs and health policy initiatives in other states. Recently, the committee has addressed the following issues: Medicare prescription drug coverage; Medicaid, health care cost containment; health care access; public health and prevention.

“If we want to see comprehensive health care reform implemented in this country, we need to work together across party lines and state borders to get the work done together,” said Norton. “Minnesota has established some nation leading reforms, and we can gain from examining what other states are doing as well.”

NCSL’s Project HITCH is a national effort to establish and develop state legislative policy expertise on health information technology. HITCH is made possible through the support of members of the NCSL Foundation, who are active in shaping the project and carrying out its goals.

“In a 21st Century economy, we need a health care system that can keep up with the modern needs of a changing health care industry,” Norton stated. “Improving information technology will help rein in costs and keep health care providers competitive in today’s high-tech economy.”
