ST. PAUL - State Representative Kim Norton was sworn in today at the Minnesota State Capitol, beginning her second term serving District 29B in the Minnesota House of Representatives. First elected in 2006, Rep. Norton’s ongoing commitment to bipartisanship and thoughtful, responsible governance have served Rochester and the State of Minnesota well over the last two years - qualities that will be greatly needed in the difficult months ahead.
“This year the state is facing a record $4.8 billion shortfall brought on by worsening economic conditions," said Rep. Norton. “Now, more than ever, these serious challenges will require bipartisan cooperation and a new approach to state government in Minnesota. Working together, I am confident we can resolve the deficit and rebuild our struggling economy. With a long-term commitment to thoughtful progress, we can make our state stronger.”
Recent economic forecasts show lawmakers must settle a record deficit brought on by a steadily worsening economy. Norton says she will focus this session on keeping Rochester’s economy strong, putting Minnesotans back to work, and balancing the budget responsibly.
“I will continue working with local business leaders and listening to working families in our area to pursue bipartisan solutions that will help keep Rochester working and growing through this economic crisis,” said Norton. “The strategic decisions we make today as we work to resolve the budget deficit and put our economy back on track will have a long-term impact on the future of all Minnesotans.”
Much of that work will begin in legislative committees throughout the coming weeks. This session Rep. Norton will be serving as a member of the Bioscience and Workforce Development Policy and Oversight Committee, Health Care and Human Services Policy and Oversight Committee, K-12 Education Policy and Oversight Committee, Higher Education and Workforce Development Policy and Oversight Committee, and the Licensing Division.
Throughout the legislative session, Rep. Norton encourages all constituents to contact her directly with questions, concerns and suggestions on any issue. Norton can be reached by phone at (651) 296-9249 or by email at rep.kim.norton@house.mn.
