We as a Legislature came through on our promise to help our friends and neighbors in the south in tonight's special session. I was glad to cast my vote in favor of a proposal that will provide $157 million in disaster relief funding for flood-affected communities in Olmsted, Houston, Fillmore, Winona, and Dodge counties.
The damage caused by last months flooding is extensive. Thousands of people needed our help immediately, and I'm pleased that we were able to come together in the Legislature to get the job done for them.
It will take time and money to rebuild key infrastructure, homes, and businesses. As people in southeastern Minnesota work to complete much of their recovery efforts before winter, the effects of this flooding will be felt for months, and possibly years to come. If additional state assistance is needed in the future to help move these efforts forward, I will work with my colleagues in the Legislature to make it happen.
Today we provided southeastern Minnesota with much-needed disaster relief funding that will help Minnesotans rebuild their lives and strengthen the future and wellbeing of the southeastern Minnesota economy. More than that, we also gave them some hope in the midst of the chaos they are living in.
Many members of the Legislature, including myself, were also poised to address our transportation needs and property tax relief for Minnesota homeowners. But instead we focused our attention narrowly on a disaster relief package in order to avoid jeopardizing any immediate funding for flood victims.
I remain committed to working throughout the interim to make sure we are ready to hit the ground running on the issues important to Minnesotans when the Legislature reconvenes in February.
