BLY VOTES TO OVERRIDE GOVERNOR’S GAMC VETO

St. Paul – The Minnesota House was unsuccessful today in their attempt to override the Governor’s veto of a legislative General Assistance Medical Care (GAMC) solution that would have provided basic care to the most vulnerable Minnesotans and a reduced cost to taxpayers. To pass the bill into law, the House needed just 3 of the 38 Republicans who voted yes ten days on the legislative GAMC solution to stand by their vote, but all 38 changed their vote to block the override.

“We worked hard, worked together, and came up with a good solution to a difficult problem," said Bly, noting the legislative solution first passed the House on a vote of 125 – 9. “Our solution costs less, covers more Minnesotans and protects hospitals and taxpayers. I am discouraged it was blocked and even more discouraged by what this will mean for Minnesotans who depend on health care.”

As a result of the blocked solution, the Governor’s Administration will move forward with a more expensive plan to auto-enroll GAMC patients into MinnesotaCare. The Governor’s plan would provide care to 21,000 Minnesotans per month at cost of $937 per enrollee for one to six months. The legislative solution would have provided care to 38,000 Minnesotans at a cost of $457 per enrollee for sixteen months.

Since the Governor’s plan covers 17,000 fewer Minnesotans per month, hospitals will see significant cuts due to the rise in uncompensated care. Statewide, hospitals are $80 million worse off under the Governor’s more expensive plan. Northfield Hospital will lose over $30,000.

General Assistance Medical Care will expire on April 1, 2010. Rep. Bly can be reached at (651) 296-7065 or by e-mail at rep.david.bly@house.mn.
