Bly Receives Recognition for Supporting Minnesotans with Disabilities

Northfield, MN - State Rep. David Bly was presented with an award this week at the Epic Enterprise Inc. banquet for his support for Minnesotans with disabilities and the workers who take care of them. Epic Enterprises is a facility that serves about 85 mentally handicapped people in the Dundas/Northfield area.

“It was a very touching banquet and a real honor to receive this recognition," said Bly. “I spent much of the evening talking with parents, staff and clients and it was so evident the importance and value of the services provided here for Minnesotans with disabilities. Their work truly makes a difference in people’s lives.”

Epic Enterprises presented Rep. Bly with a plaque that recognized Rep. Bly’s “dedicated service and advocacy for people with developmental disabilities.” The group specifically recognized Bly for his memorable speech on the house floor this past session about the harm impending budget cuts would have on the disability community in Minnesota.

“In that speech I talked about some of my early memories going with my father to work with residents at the Faribault State Hospital who were disabled. Initially, it was an uncomfortable experience for me,” said Bly. “My father told me, ‘we can’t turn away from these people, even if it’s difficult.’ I never forgot those words. We have a responsibility to support all Minnesotans, and help those who are disadvantaged live a full and independent life to the best of their ability.”

Bly authored an amendment to the final Health and Human Services bill that with the help of other legislators mitigated some of the cuts made to care providers for those with disabilities. Bly said there will be important work in the upcoming session to support Minnesotans with disabilities.

“Legislators often make analogies comparing our state budget to the budget of a family. But most Minnesota families I know do not first harm the most vulnerable in their family when times are rough,” said Bly. “I continue to visit nursing homes and care facilities in my district to find out how budget cuts and this recession are affecting them and I will bring their voices to the State Capitol this session.”
