BLY INTRODUCES BILL TO BRING PASSENGER RAIL TO NORTHFIELD

ST. PAUL – State Representative David Bly presented a bill on Tuesday in the House Transportation committee to study the prospects of a commuter rail line on existing tracks from Northfield to Rosemount on the way to St Paul. Bly acknowledged that his bill was the first of many steps required to bring commuter rail to Northfield, but said it was an important first hurdle.
“Commuter rail is a big element of the future of transit in this state," said Bly. “I want to make sure Northfield is included in the overall mix of rail projects that move forward as a plan to move Minnesota toward a 21st Century transportation system. It’s a long process, but I’m hopeful this bill can get the ball rolling.”
Rep. Bly’s legislation, HF 1380, would study the plausibility of converting the existing Rock Island rail line between Northfield and Rosemount into a commuter railway. The bill was recommended for inclusion in the House bonding bill, so no general fund revenue would need to be appropriated to fund the study.
Bly said the recent passage of the federal economic stimulus bill may bring federal dollars into Minnesota for commuter rail.
“Minnesota will be competing with other states for federal dollars on transit projects and Northfield should be part of the discussion,” said Bly.
Bly said he’s mainly focused on solutions to the budget deficit, but is also working to pass legislation to that would open up the discussion of using the Dan Patch line for commuter rail.

“There are many Northfield residents who drive long commutes to work who would greatly appreciate the convenience of a commuter rail way,” said Bly. “Whether it be the Dan Patch or Rock Island Line, it’s important to pursue all available options.”
