Sen. Tomassoni, Rep. Bly introduce “People’s Bailout” legislation

With so much emphasis on the needs of big business in these tough economic times, two Minnesota legislators have introduced bills designed to give assistance to the working men and women on the front lines of the current fiscal mess. In a Monday press conference at the Minnesota State Capitol, state Sen. David Tomassoni, DFL-Chisholm, and state Rep. David Bly, DFL-Northfield, unveiled the “People’s Bailout" bills, which are being introduced in the Senate and House.
“While the big banks have gotten the relief up to now, it’s the average folks hit hardest by the recession that are wondering how they’re going to feed their families,” said Sen. Tomassoni. “This legislation will bring the economic relief directly to those most in need. We’re targeting our efforts toward the men and women hit hardest by the economic mess, who are ready and willing to work, and need a hand up.”
Among the key provisions in the legislation are:

• A two-year moratorium on the current law limiting welfare benefits to five years.

• An extension of unemployment insurance benefits.

• Efforts to limit foreclosures, especially in rental properties.

• Initiatives to capture federal dollars for a new job-creation program.

• Language urging the State of Minnesota and the University of Minnesota to limit employee layoffs so as not to add to the number of people out of work.

“This is common-sense legislation that says working people and their families can’t wait for help to trickle down from the big business owners and the bankers. We need to get the assistance directly into the hands and wallets of people who might not know where their family’s next meal is coming from,” said Rep. Bly. “We’re hoping we can see some progress on this bill in both the House and Senate in the coming weeks.”
