To The Editor,
Earlier this week I attended a school board meeting in Belle Plaine. Lack of funding has forced a decision to discontinue bus service to children living within a two-mile radius of their school. Parents are justifiably concerned about their youngsters being able to get to school safely. Some will have to cross State Highway 169.
Instead of doing the sensible thing and providing enough funds to make sure our children are safe, we must now ask busy parents to use expensive gas driving kids to school. Worse yet, some students will find riskier ways to get to school and, sooner or later, tragedy will result.
I support legislation that will prevent this from happening. There will be enough money to do the right thing and continue school bus service in Belle Plaine. Governor Pawlenty has threatened to veto that legislation. Before he does, I hope he will come to Belle Plaine and personally explain to each and every parent why he and his wealthy friends are so set on not paying their fair share that they will tell a kindergartner who lives 1.9 miles from school to start walking.
When I was running for this office, I told you that our children come first with me. I meant it.
Regards,
Rep. David Bly
