Members of the Minnesota Legislature today reacted with enthusiasm to news that Essar Global Ltd. will invest $1.6 billion in a fully integrated steel mill in Nashwauk. Representative Loren Solberg (DFL-Grand Rapids), a longtime supporter of the project, said the news represented a historic victory for the Iron Range.
"Today is a great day for the Iron Range and a great day for Minnesota," he said. "Nashwauk was the first mining town in Itasca County, so its absolutely fitting that this is happening here."
Representative Tom Anzelc (DFL-Balsam Township) noted that the project would have a huge economic impact on the region.
"Our top priority at the legislature is to create jobs in Northern Minnesota and on that front this is just huge news," he said. "The Minnesota Steel Mill will create 700 good paying jobs and an additional 2,000 construction jobs provided by the building trades."
Senator Tom Saxhaug (DFL-Grand Rapids) said that the jobs would be a major boost for the whole region.
"This is another step towards realizing the goal of economic development on the Western Iron Range. Strong economic growth will go a long way towards curing some of the ills we are feeling in the area," said Solberg. "We are all looking forward to the first day of production at Minnesota's newest steel plant."
