ST. PAUL, MN. – Today, State Representative Kathy Brynaert (DFL–Mankato) voted against a bill on the House Floor to authorize $221 million in general obligation bonding over several years to restore the State Capitol. The bill failed to pass.
Rep. Brynaert issued the following statement:
"Today’s bonding bill was focused on a single project, the State Capitol. And I do see the Capitol restoration as a very important project that needs to be started but it should be part of a bigger statewide bonding package.
I expect to vote for a bonding bill this year that broadly improves the state’s public infrastructure and creates thousands of desperately needed jobs around the state. I support a robust, balanced and strategic package that focuses on higher education, transportation, housing, public safety, water and wastewater systems, and regional economic development. We should make a strong investment in our state’s infrastructure and take advantage of low interest rates and construction bids as well as leveraging matched dollars.
The bonding bill presented today was too narrowly construed and left out important South Central Minnesota projects. There is still time to put a bipartisan bonding package together that is strong, fair and focused on the right priorities. I urge the House majority to join me in building consensus on a regionally balanced and robust bonding package that creates jobs, both in the near and the long run, and moves the Minnesota economy forward."
