State Representative Kathy Brynaert’s legislation to fund the Minnesota State University-Mankato arena and events center was given a hearing today in the House Jobs and Economic Development Committee.
Rep. Brynaert’s bill (House File 1883) appropriates $14.5 million to make improvements to the Minnesota State University arena and expand the event center auditorium. The project will benefit taxpayers by maximizing use of existing multi-use facilities and expanding facilities to meet current and future needs of a growing regional center. The estimated annual economic impact from the increased space is more than $50 million.
Testifying on behalf of House File 1883 were: Jonathan Zierdt, Executive Director of Greater Mankato Growth; Shirley Piepho, Board Chair of the Greater Mankato Convention and Visitors’ Bureau; Gordon Awsumb, owner and developer of Downtown Mankato Place and Pat Hentges, Mankato City Administrator.
“The partnership between the University and the city of Mankato is in the best interest of both the local and state taxpayers. The arena improvements and events center expansion will be a major long-term economic benefit to our region and has strong support from the business community," stated Rep. Brynaert. “In addition, it is shovel-ready and will create more than 450 construction jobs.”
