ST. PAUL, MN – Doug Johnson from the Mankato Public Schools testified in the House E-12 Education Committee on Thursday in favor of legislation co-authored by State Representative Kathy Brynaert (DFL- Mankato). Johnson spoke to the importance of technology both for the student and the district, and noted the ability of technology to provide opportunities for students with a wide range of learning styles. He sees this bill as a step toward broader technology support.
HF 0988 would create statewide technology standards for all Minnesota schools that would make testing, record keeping, and administrative duties more efficient. To meet these standards, the bill would provide $100 million in grants and one-time per-pupil funding to be invested in innovative technology.
"Providing schools with the tools they need to be accountable and innovative in how they operate will have a direct and positive impact on the quality of education for Minnesota students," said Rep. Brynaert.
The taskforce charged with creating the technology standards would include representation from school districts, teachers, state officials and outside experts. This collaborative effort is an important component of the bill, according to Brynaert.
"This is a one-time investment that will improve the return on our technology investment," said Brynaert. "It is a piece of a more comprehensive vision of the role of technology in education."
