Housing Quick Start Program Available for Crow Wing County Residents

(ST. PAUL) — The Minnesota Housing Quick Start Disaster Recovery Program is now available in Crow Wing County. State Representative John Ward (DFL – Brainerd) co-authored and voted for the disaster relief law that included the $12.2 million in funding for this program in the Special Session that occurred on August 24, 2012.

The financial assistance is available for residents and rental property owners in Northeastern Minnesota and other areas damaged in the June flooding event (June 14 – 21, 2012) who are not eligible for Small Business Administration (SBA) assistance or who need additional assistance.

“When Minnesotans are devastated by disasters, we do the right thing and help,” said Rep. Ward. “I was very pleased that we were able to work in a bipartisan fashion and include this funding in the disaster relief law. While this won’t take care of all the damage people have suffered, this will hopefully help people who’ve had their lives turned upside down.”

The Quick Start Disaster Recovery Program provides assistance as a last resort when private insurance and federal assistance are not adequate to return a damaged home to its pre-disaster condition. The program provides a no-interest loan of up to $30,000 for home repair, which is forgiven if the owner remains in the home for 10 years. Funding for repairs to rental housing properties is also available under similar terms and conditions. If homeowners have already incurred home repair expenses as a result of the disaster, they may be eligible for reimbursement under the Quick Start program.

Minnesota Housing has contracted with local administrators to deliver the program and work with residents to complete Quick Start applications. The application deadline for Quick Start is December 17, 2012. Homeowners needing assistance should contact the local administrator for their area directly:

“If constituents need additional help or have additional questions, please contact me,” added Rep. Ward. “I will continue working closely with officials to ensure that this process is run smoothly and people receive the help they need.”
