Crow Wing County Receives Historical and Cultural Grants

(ST. PAUL) — State Representative John Ward (DFL – Brainerd) is pleased to announce that the Crow Wing County Historical Society has received another $7,000 in grant money. This Historical and Cultural Grant is funded by the Minnesota Legacy Amendment from the Arts and Cultural Heritage Fund, with money from the vote of the people of Minnesota on November 4, 2008.

This grant money will allow the Crow Wing County Historical Society to hire conservators to restore an oil painting of Lyman P. White, an important historical figure in Brainerd. White is often called the “Father of Brainerd.” He arrived in the area in 1870 and built the city’s first residence. White passed away in 1902.

In the 2011 Legislative Session, the legislature appropriated a total of $5.25 million for partnership grants “for history programs and projects…or for activities to preserve significant historic or cultural resources.” The Minnesota Historical Society then established procedures to award grant funds through extensive public input and a competitive grant process.

“Our area is rich with history and culture, and they’re part of Minnesota’s high quality of life,” said Rep. Ward. “I’m pleased that we’ve committed to preserving it. I again want to thank and congratulate Crow Wing County and the Historical Society for their great work in securing this grant money.”
