(ST. PAUL) — State Representative John Ward (DFL – Brainerd) is pleased to announced that the Crow Wing County Historical Society and the Cuyuna Iron Range Heritage Network received $7,000 and $4,250 in grant money, respectively. These Historical and Cultural Grants are funded by the Minnesota Legacy Amendment from the Arts and Cultural Heritage Fund, with money from the vote of the people of Minnesota on November 4, 2008.
This grant money will allow the Crow Wing County Historical Society to provide greater public access to primary records through a new microfilm reader and printer. The funding for the Cuyuna Iron Range Heritage Network will restore and repair windows on the Soo Line Depot, which is listed in the National Register of Historic Places and is the current home of the Cuyuna Iron Range Heritage Museum.
In the 2011 Legislative Session, the legislature appropriated a total of $5.25 million for partnership grants “for history programs and projects…or for activities to preserve significant historic or cultural resources.” The Minnesota Historical Society then established procedures to award grant funds through extensive public input and a competitive grant process.
“Minnesota has a rich culture and fascinating history, and our region is no different,” said Rep. Ward. “This funding will give the public greater access to interesting primary historical records and repair a historic treasure. One mark of a lasting society is a knowledge and love of history, along with a desire to preserve it. This funding shows our commitment to that goal.
“I want to thank and congratulate Crow Wing County, the Historical Society, and the Cuyuna Iron Range Heritage Network for their great work in securing this grant money.”
