REP. WARD SECURES $11 MILLION IN FUNDING FOR MISSISSIPPI NORTHWOODS PROJECT

(ST. PAUL) — Tonight, the Minnesota House of Representatives passed the conference committee report on the Omnibus Legacy bill. The bill contains $11 million for the acquisition of the Mississippi Northwoods Project. This project is an attempt to purchase 2,200 acres of land and 2 miles of waterways on the Mississippi River northeast of Brainerd.

The initial House Legacy bill included $7 million for the project. Through Rep. John Ward’s (DFL – Brainerd) work and discussions with members of the Legacy Funding Division, the funding went up to $11 million.

“This project has strong support from bipartisan members of the legislature, the Lessard-Sams Outdoor Heritage Council, and folks in our area as well," said Rep. Ward. “By purchasing this land, it can be used for a variety of recreational uses and conservation for generations of Minnesotans to come. We are fortunate enough to have one of the greatest states in the nation for outdoor fun and leisure, and this project will only serve to add to that in our beautiful region.

“This is a great project and while this is not all of the funding, I support this compromise and believe it will get the project near the finish line.”
