GOP IMPOSING IRRESPONSIBLE ‘BEG-BORROW-AND-STEAL BUDGET’

(ST. PAUL) — The Minnesota Legislature met today in a special session to pass the budget agreement reached by Governor Dayton and Republican leadership. The broad agreement was based on a past offer from Republicans that included $1.4 billion in revenue: $700 million from increasing the school shift and $700 million in appropriation bonds backed by future tobacco settlement money.

Rep. John Ward (DFL – Brainerd) released the following statement on the special session and budget agreement.

“It’s another sad day in Minnesota, with another Republican budget that simply kicks the can down the road. Today the Republican majority is imposing their beg-borrow-and-steal budget on the people of Minnesota. Greatly increasing the school shift and issuing general appropriation bonds is the height of fiscal irresponsibility and our state will be paying for it for decades to come.

“Governor Dayton offered 7 different opportunities for a better budget, but the Republican majority wouldn’t move an inch and is now forcing their borrow-and-spend plan on the backs of middle-class Minnesotans. We had an opportunity to come together and make some tough cuts but also position our state for long-term success and long-term balanced budgets. The offers were made, but Republicans were more interested in stealing from our children and borrowing against our future than asking 7,700 millionaires to pay their fair share.

“Middle-class Minnesotans are struggling and rather than offer a budget that protects them and works for them, Republicans worked to protect millionaires and corporate special interests. Minnesotans deserve better than this beg-borrow-and-steal budget."
