(ST. PAUL) — Two bills authored by state Representative John Ward (DFL – Brainerd), received hearings in committees last week. These bills would have direct positive impacts for the people of his district and for people across Minnesota.
HF 253, a bill that would repeal accelerated taxes for small businesses, was heard in the Taxes Committee for possible inclusion in the omnibus tax bill. Approximately 160,000 businesses in Minnesota pay this accelerated tax.
“The idea for HF 253 originally came from a small business owner in my district," Rep. Ward said. “Repealing this has received bipartisan support in the past and is a smart way for our state to invest in our small businesses. Reducing the burden on our small business owners frees them to grow local jobs and local economies.”
HF 156 repeals the tax exemption on seasonal property owners for school operating levies. Noncommercial seasonal properties, like cabins, would still be exempt from the state general levy, but would no longer be exempt from any referendum levies. Rep. Ward has worked to pass this bill every year of his 5 year legislative career.
“Our schools have suffered tremendous cuts over the last several years and this bill would help provide some much-needed funding,” Rep. Ward said. Then when we exempt certain properties from being taxed in referendum levies, we force other local taxpayers to bear a higher burden. That simply isn’t fair to our local taxpayers, and our children and schools are losing out as a result.”
HF 156 received a hearing in the Property and Local Tax Division committee on Friday, March 11 and has also been laid over for possible inclusion in the omnibus tax bill.
“These bills would have great, positive effects for people throughout Minnesota and I will continue to work to try and pass them into law,” Rep. Ward added.
