WARD ENCOURAGES MUSIC STUDENTS TO APPLY FOR MINNESOTA VARSITY PROGRAM

State Rep. John Ward is pleased to announce Minnesota Varsity, an opportunity being offered by Minnesota Public Radio to showcase Minnesota’s best young classical musicians.
To participate in Minnesota Varsity, classical music students ages 14-18—vocalists, instrumental soloists and small ensembles—from around the state are asked to go online and submit a recording of themselves performing. The submission window is from January 3 to February 15, 2011.
Classical MPR will then select 15-20 submissions for the next round. Those chosen will be matched with a professional recording engineer to produce a high-quality recording. These recordings will be played for a panel of celebrity judges from the Minnesota classical-music scene, with five performers chosen for the final round. Those participating in the final round will be asked to perform in a special live production at MPR’s Fitzgerald Theater in St. Paul on April 17, 2011.
“This program is one example of what MPR is able to do thanks to the Minnesota Legacy Amendment’s Arts and Cultural Heritage Fund," said Ward. “I would encourage every local student who is serious about music to consider applying.”
All rules and information about Minnesota Varsity will be posted online at classicalmpr.org/varsity. Submissions will be accepted Jan. 3 to Feb. 15, 2011.
