State Representative John Ward invites organizations and individuals of Brainerd to attend a Mn/DOT meeting to introduce the Mississippi River Trail on July 1st. The bike trail starts at the headwaters of Lake Itasca and travels down the American landscape to the Gulf of Mexico. Brainerd is included in one of the trail’s six geographic regions in Minnesota.
“Residents of Brainerd and the surrounding area have always enjoyed the beauty and majesty of the Mississippi," said Ward. “This trail gives us another opportunity to do just that. Plus, it never hurts to get a little exercise.”
The trail is based largely along the shoulders of low-traffic paved roads. The meeting is a chance for interested parties to learn about the current route and future plans for it. Discussion topics will range from marketing to potential economic opportunities. Mn/DOT is hoping to gather elected officials, city staff, state agencies, tourism officials, and others who might have a stake in the trail.
“I hope to get a good showing at the meeting,” said Ward. “With the right mixture of practicality and vision, we can make this a boon for the Brainerd area.”
You can find maps of the current route at the Mississippi River Trail website. The meeting at the Arboretum will run from 3:30-5:30 p.m. Mn/DOT hopes to get a general idea of the number of participants and appreciates RSVPs. To RSVP please contact Sharon Henschell at Sharon.henschell@state.mn.us or 651-366-4172.
