WARD BILL ESTABLISHES ANNUAL “AMERICAN LEGION DAY”

St. Paul, MN – Legislation authored by State Rep. John Ward that will establish September 16 of each year as American Legion Day passed on the House floor today with broad bipartisan support on a vote of 123-6.
Rep. Ward said he was honored to carry this legislation in support of the work done by 14,000 American Legion clubs and their 3 million members nationwide.
“What an honor and privilege for me to be the chief author of the American Legion Bill in the Minnesota House" said Ward. “For generations, American Legion clubs have been at the very center of our communities, first and foremost supporting our veterans and their families.
We also thank them for the other contributions to our communities – whether it’s their annual blood drive, college scholarships to deserving youth, or logging thousands of hours of volunteer time at VA hospitals, including driving veterans to their medical appointments.”
If signed into law by the Governor, September 16, 2010 will be the very first American Legion Day in Minnesota; each club and community will celebrate in their own way.
“This bill not only recognizes this one day to celebrate our American Legion clubs, it also gives us another opportunity to say those five very special words each and every veteran deserves to hear daily - thank you for your service,” said Ward. “I am proud to carry this resolution and even more proud to be a member of three local American Legion Posts.”
