St. Paul, MN – State Rep. John Ward (DFL – Brainerd) is pleased to announce there will be thirteen vacancies on the Minnesota Council on Disability (MSCOD) as of January 2010.
The Council is in need of citizens eager to participate in the development of disability public policy. MSCOD would like to have a member on the Council from each development region throughout the state.
“If you care about the issues our friends and family members with disabilities face, or if you are a member of this community, this is a great opportunity to get involved," said Ward. “We’ve come a long way, but there are still challenges to address and opportunities to advance.”
Members of the Council work closely in advising state and local government officials, community organizations that do business with the disability community, and the public on human rights matters. They also educate these groups on the impact public policy has on people with physical, sensory, mental, or emotional disabilities.
It is MSCOD’s goal to represent people with disabilities and the organizations that serve them first and foremost. The majority of council members are persons with disabilities.
Meetings take place four times a year in St. Paul. Those interested in applying for membership may do so by contacting MSCOD by calling 651-361-7800 or emailing council.disability@state.mn.us.
