REP. WARD ANNOUNCES TWO FUNDING REQUESTS FOR LOCAL PROJECTS

State Rep. John Ward is pleased to announce two different programs that are requesting proposals for funding. The Minnesota Department of Agriculture (MDA) has made available requests for proposals (RFPs) for two new grant programs. First, to combat the threat posed by invasive forest pests, Forest Protection Reserve funds were appropriated to the MDA from the Outdoor Heritage Fund. The priority of the state is to prevent or slow the spread and subsequent impacts of emerald ash borer within Minnesota. The MDA is making this funding available as competitive, matching grants to local units of government and other entities. Two grant programs are available:
1.) INCIDENT REPONSE GRANTS. Competitive, matching grants are available to local units of government and other entities seeking to respond to documented infestations of emerald ash borer on lands under their jurisdiction, ownership or management.

2.) PLANNING AND PREPAREDNESS GRANTS. Competitive, matching grants are available to local units of government and other entities seeking to plan and prepare for the invasion of the emerald ash borer.

Interested parties should contact Robert Koch, Ph.D., Research Scientist at the Minnesota Department of Agriculture, 651-201-6549 or robert.koch@state.mn.us
In addition, the Lessard-Sams Council is also seeking funding requests for 2010 for the Outdoor Heritage Fund. An estimated $55 million dollars from the Outdoor Heritage Fund becomes available July 1, 2010. The Outdoor Heritage Fund was created as a result of passage of the Clean Water, Land and Legacy constitutional amendment last fall. Requests must protect, restore, or enhance prairies, wetlands, forests and habitat for fish, game, and wildlife, and are due to the L-SOHC no later than 5:00 p.m. CST, November 2, 2009.
“I encourage anyone who feels they qualify for any of these grants to apply before the deadline," said Ward.
