St. Paul, MN –State Rep. John Ward (DFL-Brainerd) was very pleased to learn on Monday that an amendment he authored to repeal the tax-exempt status for seasonal property for school operating levies made it into the House Omnibus Tax Bill.
Ward's amendment failed to get the support needed for passage on the House floor last week; over the week-end, the conferees of the Omnibus Tax Bill agreed to add it to the final bill.
"We need every dollar of revenue for our schools we can get," said Ward. "Our district has one of the largest number of seasonal properties in the state; this provision will bring significant funding into our schools by bringing those seasonal property owners into our tax base."
The tax bill is expected to pass on the House floor late Monday. In addition to exempting seasonal properties, the bill includes significant property tax relief by creating a new "Homestead Credit State Refund", which links property taxes to an owner's ability to pay. The change in the seasonal – recreational tax status will take place in 2010.
"If nothing is done this session, they will increase by another $559 million next year," said Ward. "Homeowners, and our schools, are hurting - this bill offers both of them some relief."
