Veterans deserve our continued support

Dear Editor,

As we celebrate Veteran's Day this year, our thoughts and prayers go out to the thousands of men and women who are serving our country in Iraq and Afghanistan, as well as their family and friends here at home. I wonder if any of us truly understand the sacrifices they are making on our behalf, and the challenges they face as they return home.

Last session, we passed many bills that will help make this transition back to civilian life easier – from increasing funding for the Department of Veterans Affairs and the County Service Officers, to providing $1 thousand a semester in financial aid to help them continue their education. The bill also extends education benefits to the spouses of military members who were killed in action.

We also are working to address the post-traumatic stress issues many veterans struggle with, oftentimes leaving them depressed and unable to move forward without the psychological and mental health assistance they so desperately need.

Maybe most important are the small things we can each do on a personal basis for the veterans in our own communities. As they return home, I encourage all of you to reach out to welcome them back, and let them know that we appreciate all they have done for us.

Sincerely,
State Representative John Ward, Brainerd
