State Representative John Ward, Brainerd, has been asked to serve on the Health and Human Services Disabilities Working Group. This group of six legislators is responsible for making recommendations to the Health and Human Services Policy Committee on how to address the concerns of people with disabilities over a variety of issues. The recommendations will be considered as part of health care legislation to be introduced during the 2008 legislative session.
"When we consider health care policy changes, it is critical that we have a good understanding of the needs of Minnesotans with disabilities, as well as their families" said Rep. Paul Thissen, chair of the Health and Human Services Policy Committee. "Rep. Ward's experience teaching disabled students will be a definite asset to this group."
Rep. Ward has over 20 years of experience as a Special Education teacher. In addition, he started and was the head coach of the Brainerd Adapted Floor Hockey team, which is a Minnesota State High School League sponsored activity for students/athletes with physical and mental handicaps. Under his direction, the team won one state high school tournament and placed second or third several times. Ward has since retired after 34 years of teaching and coaching.
"It is critical that any plans for health care reform include measures for people with disabilities," said Ward. "I'm pleased to be able to contribute to this working group and committed to improving the lives of the disabled, as well as their families."
The first meeting of the working group will be held on August 17 to commemorate the 17th anniversary of the passage of the Americans with Disabilities Act.
