PROPOSALS SOUGHT FOR ENVIRONMENTAL AND NATURAL RESOURCES PROJECTS

Representative John Ward (DFL - Brainerd) was recently informed that the Legislative-Citizen Commission on Minnesota Resources (LCCMR) is calling for proposals for projects to be considered for funding in 2008. The proposals are due Tuesday, September 4, 2007.
In 2008, $22.8 million is available to fund environment and natural resources projects. The proposals should fall into three main categories:
(1) An open category on selected topics of native prairies, water quality, shorelands, invasive species, and natural resource data;
(2) Invited proposals to ongoing successful past funding for State Parks and Trails, Forest Conservation Easements, Habitat Conservation Corridors, the Minnesota County Biological Survey, Regional Grant programs for park and natural area acquisition, local water plan implementation and carbon emission reduction and renewable alternative energy; and
(3) An open category for creative ideas for "disruptive technology and innovation" to improve Minnesota's environment and natural resources.
According to Ward, the final recommended proposals will be submitted to the Legislature for funding consideration early in the 2008 Legislative Session. Once adopted in law, the funding can begin July 1, 2008.
"Our district is known for its lakes and natural resources," said Ward. "This is an excellent opportunity to gain funding for area projects and I would encourage anyone who believes they have a worthwhile project to contact the LCRM."
The LCCMR is a 17 member group with 10 legislators and 7 appointed non-legislative members. They are charged with studying natural resource issues and developing a strategic plan and funding recommendations for the Environment and Natural Resources Trust Fund for legislative action.
