REP. WARD PROPOSES TEEN CHALLENEGE PROGRAM FOR BRAINERD

ST. PAUL – State Representative John Ward (DFL-Brainerd) appeared before the House Health Care and Human Services Finance Division today on behalf of his proposal to bring Teen Challenge, a long-term residential chemical dependency treatment center, to the Brainerd area.
Ward was joined by Reverend Rich Scherber, Executive Director of Teen Challenge, and several present and past clients of the facility, who testified on the model and the success of this program.
Ward is proposing that a Teen Challenge facility be opened in the former Regional Treatment Center in Brainerd.
"This is a win/win situation for our area," said Ward. "We have a methamphetamine epidemic that needs to be addressed, and we are looking for health and human service programs for the Regional Treatment Center. This proposal helps meet both of those needs."
The testimony received very favorable response from the committee, and the proposal was held over for possible inclusion in the final Omnibus Health Care and Human Services Bill.
"I believe there is strong recognition that our area needs additional treatment facilities, and it also evident that successful rehabilitation costs the state less in the long run than incarceration," said Ward.
"Considering the strong bipartisan support this proposal received in the Committee today, I'm very optimistic it will make the final funding package."
