ST. PAUL –Representative John Ward (DFL – Brainerd) is announcing the availability of grants for a variety of agencies that provide legal assistance to victims of domestic or dating violence, stalking or sexual assault.
The Legal Assistance for Victims (LAV) Grant Program awards grants to legal clinics, domestic violence victims' shelters, bar associations, sexual assault programs, private nonprofit groups, Indian tribal governments and organizations, territorial organizations, legal aid or statewide legal services, and faith and/or community-based legal services.
In addition to providing legal help, the grants can also be used to provide enhanced training for lawyers representing these victims. For more information, go to http://www.usdoj.gov/ovw/docs/lav2007.pdf.
Ward, who sits on the Sexual Assault Services Board, encourages any agency that provides these services to apply for the grant.
"The last thing a victim of sexual assault should have to worry about is finding the money for legal assistance," said Ward. "I would encourage all of the agencies in our area to apply for this funding."
