Late Friday night, the Governor signed a health care omnibus bill, but made $380 million in deep cuts to hospitals through a line-item veto of General Assistance Medical Care. The local impact of the cuts will be significant in Greater Minnesota and includes a $569,347 cut to Kanabec Hospital in Mora and an $182,070 cut to Pine Medical Center in Sandstone. Rep. Tim Faust responded to the cuts and what the impact will be for hospitals and jobs.
“With unemployment already at a record high, I am very concerned with cutting our hospitals and medical clinics so deeply. All of us depend on the quality care we receive at our hospitals. We shouldn’t let these difficult economic times erode jobs, services and the care so important to our daily lives."
“The fact is this Bush economy is already taking a serious toll on our hospitals. More Minnesotans have lost their health insurance which drives up uncompensated costs at our hospitals. And to save the family budgets, more Minnesotans are delaying medical treatment, check-ups and procedures. For our hospitals, the Governor’s line-item veto of health care has made a bad problem much worse.”
