FAUST BILL TO REFORM GREEN ACRES MOVES FORWARD

St. Paul – Legislation chief-authored by State Rep. Tim Faust to reform the green acres property tax program passed out of the Agricultural and Rural Economies Committee this week and will continue moving through the legislative process. Faust said this legislation is an important first step to make changes to the Green Acres program that reflects the concerns that farmers and Rural Minnesotans have shared with him since changes to the green acres program were made last session.
“We need a solution to the Green Acres issue that reflects the concerns of family farmers and rural Minnseotans," said Faust. “I’ve spent the last several months talking with farmers and landowners who have been affected by the changes to Green Acres and the bill I have authored represents a solution that includes their full input.” said Faust.
Two Green Acres bills were passed out of the Agricultural and Rural Economies Committee this past week. The first bill repeals all of the changes that were made to Green Acres last session. The second bill, authored by Rep. Faust’s, permanently grandfathers every farmer and landowner with land enrolled in Green Acres previous to 2009. Faust said he favors a full repeal of the changes made last session but also authored his bill to “cover more bases.”
“At this point of the session we don’t know exactly what the solution for Green Acres is going to be. That’s why it’s important to pursue every possible option,” said Faust. “It doesn’t matter if it’s a bill I authored or someone else as long we reach a solution that benefits the farmers and landowners of rural Minnesota.”
Faust’s legislation would work the same as a full repeal to any farmer or landowner with land enrolled in Green Acres prior to 2009. The land would stay in the program under the previous rules and there would be no penalty if the ownership shifted from one member of a family to the other. As the Green Acres legislation moves through the legislative process, Faust encouraged interested citizens to contact him with questions.
“The input and ideas from the public have been an important part of our effort to make positive reforms to Green Acres and it will continue to be as we work on a solution throughout the session,” said Faust. “If you have questions, concerns or ideas, please call or e-mail to let me know.”
