ST. PAUL - After spending a week in House floor sessions passing budget bills, State Representative Tim Faust will be talking to constituents across the district about the state budget.
"During last summer and fall, I told you we were going to stick to the basics at the Capitol," said Faust. "Last week we delivered on the basics. The House budget makes school funding fairer, expands access to affordable health care, and cuts property taxes."
Faust will be holding the following town meetings:
April 28
· 8:00 AM Double J Café in Ogilvie
· 9:30 AM Buzzanos in Mora
· 11:00 AM Braham City Hall
· 12:30 PM Cabin Coffeehouse Pine City
April 30
· 8:00 AM Hinckley City Hall
· 9:30 AM Grapevine in Sandstone
The House passed 8 state budget bills over four days, oftentimes working into the early hours of the morning. This is the earliest many House members can recall budget bills being passed off the floor. Faust said they even came close to breaking the record for the number of hours on the House floor in a single week. However, the long session resulted in several key pieces of legislation being passed, including:
A 3 percent increase for K-12 schools both in 2008 and 2009
$125 million in property tax relief school district levy buy downs
Voluntary all-day Kindergarten
Restoring cuts to early childhood education
Providing health insurance for the 70,000 uninsured Minnesota children by 2011
Cap on college tuition and MnSCU tuition freeze for 2009
More support for Minnesota's veterans, including education benefits
Budget bills are now heading to conference committees to iron out differences with the Senate before heading to the Governor's desk.
