ST. PAUL - State Representative Tim Faust announced today that the House Agriculture, Rural Economies and Veterans Affairs Finance Division included his proposal to fund the state's World War II memorial dedication ceremony and provide transportation to any World War II Veteran to attend. Faust, a member of the committee, said he initially wanted to make sure every war veteran from the “greatest generation" has a chance to attend the ceremony this June in St. Paul. The committee ended up deciding to match $250,000 of private donations raised for the entire ceremony.
“World War II veterans answered their country’s call like no other generation,” Faust said. “It’s only fitting that as many of these veterans as possible have the opportunity to attend as we honor their service.”
The memorial, which is being constructed on the Capitol mall, will be dedicated on June 9th at 2:00 p.m.
"This should have been done 50 years ago," said Faust. "With only about 50,000 WWII vets left in Minnesota, this may be one of the last chances we get to honor them as a state."
Faust said the idea received bipartisan support during committee discussions.
“In the Minnesota House you have 134 people from different parts of the state, with different backgrounds and different views on the issues,” Faust added. “But when it comes to honoring and supporting veterans, we end up speaking with one voice.”
Faust expects the Agriculture, Rural Economies and Veterans Affairs omnibus finance bill to come for a vote on the House floor very soon. The bill has bipartisan support in the House and the Governor has expressed support for most of the legislation.
