ST. PAUL, MN – Yesterday, a Disaster Recovery Working Group met at the State Capitol to begin drafting a disaster recovery package in response to the record-setting late June flood across Northeastern Minnesota and the July 2-4th blow down in Cass, Itasca, Beltrami, Clearwater, and Hubbard counties. A one-day Special Session is expected to be called on August 24th by Governor Dayton to approve state disaster assistance.
State Representative Tom Anzelc issued the following statement:
“For flood damage, the federal government will cover 75% of eligible costs and the state must cover the remaining 25% for repairs to public infrastructure like roads and bridges, state parks and public buildings. According to Kris Eide, Directory of Homeland Security and Emergency Management, who testified at the Working Group meeting, the state’s funding portion totals $189 million. Currently, Governor Dayton has appealed the federal government’s decision to deny assistance to homeowners and businesses for losses to private property. Contained in the bill draft is $7.8 million to clean-up a massive number of trees downed by early July straight-line winds in Cass, Itasca, Beltrami, Clearwater, and Hubbard counties.
There has been extensive and widespread damage to homes and businesses from the flood as well as public infrastructure. Our communities need adequate resources to rebuild and our residents need their homes and businesses restored. I am very concerned about homeowners who lost hot water heaters and furnaces. These need to be replaced before the weather changes. I will continue working with the Dayton Administration and state agencies on this urgent matter and to swiftly move the recovery process forward for both natural disasters.”
A Special Session is expected to be called by Governor Dayton on August 24th.
