Today, State Representative Tom Anzelc (DFL-Balsam Township) voted in support of a statewide bonding package that invests $496 million into Minnesota’s aging infrastructure and creates thousands of construction and long-term jobs. Rep. Anzelc advocated all session for a robust and strategic bonding bill to create jobs and spur the state’s economy.
“There is $4.5 million in much needed funding to demolish, renovate and expand space at the Itasca Community College in Grand Rapids. The funding will be used to renovate 4,250 square feet of existing instructional and student service space," stated Rep. Anzelc. “It will support science, technology, engineering and math initiatives and a natural resources program. This is exactly the type of bonding investment the state should be making to train our workforce for the new economy. Our community colleges, and this project at Donovan Hall, will enhance our workforce training for Northern Minnesota employers.”
Other bonding for roads and bridges, wastewater systems, flood hazard mitigation, buildings on college campuses, veterans’ homes and Greater Minnesota business development grants will put thousands of unemployed construction workers – a sector that was hit hardest during the economic downturn - back on the job. It also stretches taypayer dollars by taking advantage of current record low interest rates and construction bids.
“I very much wanted a robust and strategic bonding package this session to create thousands of construction and permanent jobs vital to the state’s economic recovery. The bill passed today will do that and it has a great direct benefit to our region,” concluded Rep. Anzelc.
