Environmental permitting bill signed into law

Dear Editor:

When the 2012 legislative session began, I pledged that my highest priority was to create jobs and strengthen Northern Minnesota’s economy. An environmental permitting bill signed into law by Governor Dayton could do just that by creating 150 new jobs on the Iron Range.

During the House Floor debate on this bill, I successfully added a provision to shorten the environmental review process for Magnetation -- a company that wants to build a new $300 million iron pellet plant in Itasca County. By speeding up the review process the company will be able to begin construction by the end of 2012. It allows Magnetation to meet a tight construction timeline and gives Minnesota an edge in the competition for the new plant with Indiana and Wisconsin.

Thanks to Governor Dayton, the Pollution Control Agency, the Department of Natural Resources and the House Iron Range delegation -- Representatives Rukavina, Dill, and Melin -- for their assistance in getting the Magnetation project one step closer to reality. Minnesota is now very well positioned for the Magnetation plant and the 150 jobs that come with it.

Be assured, I am focused on creating jobs in Northern Minnesota. There is much unfinished business left this session and I will continue to do all I can to strengthen our middle-class and move our economy forward.

Sincerely,

Tom Anzelc

State Representative
