(SAINT PAUL) – Today Rep. Tom Anzelc (DFL - Balsam Township) announced that he would forgo his state salary in the event of a government shutdown. Legislators were informed late last week that they could elect to receive their salary during a shutdown.
Rep. Anzelc released the following statement on his announcement:
“Northern Minnesota has always had a proud tradition of a strong work ethic: a decent wage for a hard day’s work. If government shuts down, I shouldn’t get paid.
“Like Governor Dayton and my DFL colleagues in the House and Senate, I believe we should stand up for middle-class families and ask the richest 2 percent to pay their fair share.
“I will continue to work diligently to avoid a government shutdown, but the Republican majority needs to ask their wealthy campaign donors to pitch in their fair share. From the beginning, it has been the Republican’s priority to make devastatingly deep cuts instead of asking the wealthiest Minnesotans to contribute to a solution. Now, it appears they are willing to take our great state into a shutdown rather than move an inch from their initial budget. In all my years of public service, I have never seen such irresponsibility.
“The stakes of a shutdown are too high for political games. The GOP needs to remove their feet from concrete and compromise with Governor Dayton before it’s too late."
