Anzelc Praises Governor Dayton’s State of the State Address

St. Paul, Minnesota – State Rep. Tom Anzelc (DFL-Balsam Township) praised Governor Dayton for his focus on jobs and education in his first state of the state address. Anzelc said it was a highlight to hear the first DFL Governor address the State Legislature since Governor Rudy Perpich.

“Governor Dayton talked about a bold vision for the future of this state that is paved with jobs, education, and opportunity for all Minnesotans," said Anzelc. “I look forward to working with Governor Dayton on his agenda to get Minnesotans working and get Minnesota back on track.”

In Dayton’s speech he focused on five “investments” to make Minnesota better: jobs, education, transportation, health of our people, communities, and environment, and in the transformation of government. Anzelc said his agenda was the main reason he opposed HF 130, the Republican Phase 1 budget proposal which cut $900 million.

“Republicans did not consult Governor Dayton or the DFL legislature before rushing through their piecemeal budget,” said Anzelc. “The result is a bill that raises property taxes, cuts jobs, and makes it harder for students to afford a college education.”

The cuts include a permanent $487 million reduction in local government aid. Non-partisan estimates indicate this cut could increase property taxes by an estimated $300 million. The bill also freezes wages for over 40,000 public employees and cuts higher education by $180 million.

“It’s unfair and unwise to raise property taxes to resolve our budget shortfall,” said Anzelc. “We need a responsible solution that balances the sacrifice instead of pushing the entire burden onto property tax payers.”

With a $6.2 billion budget deficit and over 200,000 Minnesotans out of work, Anzelc said there was much work to be done.

“We are nowhere near where we need to be to create jobs or balance the budget,” said Anzelc. “I am taking a cue from our Governor and will work hard to invest in what has made Minnesota great, because it will make Minnesota great once again.”
