Needed Transportation Projects Get Green Light

Anzelc says projects will create jobs, improve safety

Saint Paul, Minnesota – The Minnesota Department of Transportation released its 2010 construction schedule which includes over 280 project totaling over $1 billion. Several needed projects will begin in a matter of months in Northern Minnesota. State Rep. Tom Anzelc (DFL – Balsam Township) said the projects will put workers back on the job and improve roads for years to come.

“This is great news for jobs and our local economies in Northern Minnesota," said Anzelc. “Orange cones and detours might be a little frustrating, but it’s well worth it for the jobs that are created and for the improved safety on our roads.”

Local projects announced include:

Highway 65 - Nashwauk north to Highway 1 - will be resurfaced and repaved. Estimated construction cost of $13.2 million. Construction is scheduled to begin in June and conclude in October. Periodic lane restrictions should be expected.

Highway 169 – Taconite to Nashwauk - will be resurfaced and repaved. Estimated construction cost of $11.2 million. Construction is scheduled to begin in July and conclude in August 2011. Periodic lane restrictions should be expected.

Highway 71 – Highway 107 to Highway 361 – will be resurfaced and repaved. Estimated construction cost of $4.2 million. Construction is scheduled to begin in July and conclude in October. Periodic lane restrictions should be expected.

Highway 71 and Highway 217 in Koochiching County will have an overlay bridge deck. Estimated construction cost of $673,000. Construction is scheduled to begin in June and conclude in September. Periodic lane restrictions should be expected.

“These projects will pay workers and contractors who are ready to get to work,” said Anzelc. “Along with our bonding bill and economic development investments, this will add another jolt to speed our economic recovery.”
