Governor signals he will sign it
St. Paul, MN – The Legislature passed a jobs-focused bonding bill today on a vote of 89 to 44 that will create as many as 27,000 needed jobs. Governor Pawlenty has signaled he will sign the bill into law, but may line-item veto some projects from the $986 million bill. State Rep. Tom Anzelc (DFL – Balsam Township) applauded the early passage of a bill that includes significant investment for Northern Minnesota.
“This is a good day for thousands of Minnesota workers, many who have been out of a job for over a year," said Anzelc. “By passing this bill now we can get shovels in the dirt during the spring construction season.”
Some projects have been pared back and others added, including $47.5 million for the Moose Lake Sex Offender facility. Projects that will create jobs and spur local economies in Northern Minnesota remained in the bill, including:
• $285,000 for a joint Koochiching and St. Louis County project to pre-design a wastewater treatment facility at Voyageurs National Park, Kabetogama and other border waters.
• Modifies language to allow Koochiching County to move forward with a project to design a plasma torch gasification facility that coverts solid waste into energy.
• Modifies language to assure state grant funds can be used to move forward the Essar steel mill project in Nashwauk.
• Funding for a deteriorating wastewater treatment facility in Williams.
