Anzelc says KeeTac steel workers will be called back to work soon

State Representative Tom Anzelc (DFL – Balsam Township) reported today that U.S. Steel has notified KeeTac steel workers that they will be called back on the job in coming months. Approximately 350 workers at KeeTac were laid off nearly a year ago after U.S. Steel temporarily shut down due to the economic recession. Anzelc said U.S. Steel’s decision to move forward could not have come at a better time for many workers and family members who were already at the brink.
“Some workers were in danger of foreclosure, some were running out of unemployment benefits, and some were contemplating moving from the Iron Range," said Anzelc. “This is great news for workers, families and communities across the region,” said Rep. Anzelc.
Anzelc said U.S. Steel sent a letter to officials at United Steel Workers Local 2660 that indicated they will call back all the workers pending a physical examination. According to that letter, production will begin in late Fall of this year.
“I am happy our economy is moving in the right direction and that U.S. Steel has decided to call these workers back,” said Anzelc. “This good news is hopefully a sign of a lasting economic recovery to come that will spur jobs for thousands of other Minnesotans who are still out of work because of this recession.”
