ST. PAUL - State Representative Tom Anzelc (DFL - Balsam Township) alerted residents today about contributions to the state's natural resources and gaming and fishing through lottery sales. District 3A, which includes, Koochiching, Lake of the Woods, and North and East Itasca County, had $4,467,063 in lottery sales from July of 2007 through June of 2008. During this period, 50 businesses in the district served as lottery retailers, and earned $268,514 in commissions and incentives. $2,282,553 in prizes was redeemed in the district as well.
“Our state lottery is generating thousands of dollars for dozens of local businesses in our district. It makes a big difference in this tough economy," said Anzelc."The contributions also preserve our natural resources and will create a higher quality of hunting and fishing in the northwoods. It’s a ‘win, win’ situation.”
The sales from this year’s lottery resulted in direct contributions of $291, 252 to the Environment and Natural Resources Trust Fund and $616,455 to the General Fund. In addition, the Game and Fish Fund and the Natural Resources Fund each received $100,956.
The Environment and Natural Resources Trust Fund and the Game and Fish Fund are spent on several projects that promote natural resource preservation, fishing, and hunting. For example, last year over $4 million was spent to restore Minnesota's fish and wildlife habitat corridors in order to ensure healthy populations of fish and wildlife. In total, the project has resulted in the restoration or conservation of more than 100,000 acres.
