LACK OF URGENCY AT DNR ON CANISTEO MINE PIT COMES AT PUBLIC SAFETY EXPENSE

Dear Letter to Editor,

The average citizens of Bovey, Coleraine, and Taconite deserve answers about the rising water level at the Canisteo Mine Pit and they deserve action from their government to fix the problem. As your State Legislator, I want to let you know what is going on with this situation in the clearest terms possible.
After years of work, we secured $3.5 million at the Legislature this year to finally address the problem at the Canisteo Mine Pit once and for all. However, the DNR is threatening to delay the project to study more options that could postpone the project for over a year. The people in Bovey don’t need another study to know their wet basements are a result of the rising water table at the Canisteo Mine Pit. This lack of urgency by the DNR is unsafe and unacceptable.
The DNR has studied this problem for several years and known about it for several more. They continue to delay any real action and deny the existence of a serious problem. At this point the only thing the DNR should be doing is finalizing any plan of action to resolve the problem. There are options based on sound science on the table right now, and I don’t care which option they choose, but its time for them to make that choice and move forward. Furthermore, I am worried that if too much time passes, the DNR will reallocate the funds we secured this year and the opportunity to fully fund the dewatering of the Canisteo Mine Pit will be lost.
I will continue pressing the DNR to quit talking about this problem and start actually solving it. In the meantime, I encourage anyone from Bovey, Coleraine, and Taconite who has further questions about this matter to contact me.

Sincerely,
Rep. Tom Anzelc, Balsam Township, District 3A
