St. Paul, MN – Lawmakers today passed a supplemental funding bill for Minnesota's public schools, providing $49 million in needed state aid to Minnesota schools. Rep. Tom Anzelc (DFL – Balsam Township) applauded the bill, saying despite the current budget deficit, it was necessary to remain committed to education.
"If we want Minnesota to continue providing a world-class education to our students, we must invest in our public schools and do so consistently, no matter what our budget situation looks like," said Anzelc. "Our public schools are struggling and this funding increase gives them the resources they need to provide a high-quality education to our students in Northern Minnesota and throughout the state."
The bill provides an additional $51 per-pupil funding increase to be distributed to every school district in the state. Districts would also have additional short-term flexibility to meet urgent needs by allowing them to make a one-time only transfer of $51 per student from the district's capital budget reserve account to the district's general operating fund. The bill is largely funded through unused Q-Comp funds, a program initiated by Governor Pawlenty. Anzelc said this is an appropriate use of resources given the current budget situation.
"It's not like we are taking this money from some other program, we are talking about millions of dollars just sitting in St. Paul," said Anzelc. "I think most Minnesotans would agree we should spend those dollars on kids for 09 school year, school boards and administrators are planning their funding priorities now."
Anzelc said he hopes the Governor will sign the bill, which passed the House with an overwhelming majority on a vote of 97-35.
