MN STEEL AND CANISTEO MINE PIT OVERFLOW PROJECTS BECOME REALITY

Governor signs bonding bill into law, fully funding both projects

ST. PAUL – Rep. Loren Solberg (DFL- Grand Rapids), Rep. Tom Anzelc (DFL – Balsam Township) and Sen. Tom Saxhaug (DFL-Grand Rapids) were pleased the Governor signed the Capital Investment bill into law with both the Minnesota Steel project in Nashwauk and the Canisteo Mine Pit Overflow project in Bovey included.
Solberg said the years of work put into the final bill will soon pay off for Northern Minnesota and all of the state.
"It's satisfying that after years of hard-work, these projects have finally become a reality," said Solberg, who served on the Capital Investment Conference Committee. "This means good paying jobs are coming to the Iron Range and coming soon."
The final bill includes $28 million to fund infrastructure for the Minnesota Steel projects. In total, the project is expected to create 2 thousand construction jobs, as well as over 700 permanent, full-time jobs. According to Rep Anzelc, the Minnesota Steel project will revitalize mining in Northern Minnesota.
"The rich tradition of mining on the Western Mesabi range was reignited today by this important achievement," said Anzelc, who chief authored the MN Steel legislation. "Northern Minnesota will receive an economic boost from the new mill both now, and for years to come. This truly is a significant milestone for our region."
The Canisteo Mine Pit Overflow project received $3.5 million, funding that is desperately needed to address a major safety risk in Bovey, Taconite and Coleraine. Rep. Anzelc was relieved the project was approved.
"Rep. Solberg, in particular, worked a very long time to accomplish this," said Anzelc. "To finally have this project fully funded and ready-to-go is a huge relief. I'm grateful we have secured the funds to end this safety risk once and for all."
