ST. PAUL – State Representative Tom Anzelc (DFL – Balsam Township) alerted residents today about contributions to the state's natural resources and gaming and fishing through lottery sales. District 3A, which includes, Koochiching, Lake of the Woods, and North and East Itasca County, had $3,744,800 in lottery sales from July of 2006 through June of 2007. Those sales resulted in direct contributions of $258,391 to the Environment and Natural Resources Trust Fund and $539,251 to the General Fund. $1,772,328 in prizes was redeemed in the district as well.
"These contributions preserve our natural resources and will create a higher quality of hunting and fishing in the northwoods," said Anzelc. "Our state lottery is also generating thousands of dollars for dozens of local businesses in our district."
During this period, 49 businesses in the district served as lottery retailers, and earned $223,753 in commissions and incentives. In addition the Game and Fish Fund, and the Natural Resources Fund each received $92,070.
The Environment and Natural Resources Trust Fund and the Game and Fish Fund are spent on several projects that promote natural resource preservation, fishing, and hunting. For example, during the last budget biennium (2005-2007) over $4 million was spent to restore Minnesota's fish and wildlife habitat corridors in order to ensure healthy populations of fish and wildlife.
