ST. PAUL – Rep. Tom Anzelc (DFL - Balsam Township) announced today that U.S. Steel will embark on a $300 million expansion of its taconite plant in Keewatin. The plant expansion is great news for the Iron Range and should create hundreds of new jobs.
Details of the plan were unveiled at Keewatin City Hall today with Governor Tim Pawlenty, U.S. Senators Norm Coleman and Amy Klobuchar, State Senators Tom Saxhaug and David Tomassoni, State Representative Tom Anzelc, Keewatin Mayor Tom Sampson, and Nashwauk Mayor Bill Hendricks. Anzelc said this renewed investment opens the door to far reaching benefits for the Iron Range.
"This deal represents the re-birth of the West Mesabi Range," said Anzelc, who grew up in Keewatin. "It will improve our schools, create permanent jobs, and encourage greater educational opportunities to a new generation."
The plant expansion will restart a production line and upgrade facilities and mining equipment. The Keetac plant currently produces 6 million tons of taconite each year. The expansion will increase that number to about 10 million tons. Anzelc said the plant expansion in Keewatin should create around 75 permanent jobs for the area as well as an influx of many construction jobs.
"The important thing now is to see this project through to completion," said Anzelc. "I will continue working with local, state, and federal officials to make sure we move ahead, on course, to finish this important project for our region."
